It has been nearly four years since Gunma Crane Thunders became a member of our group, and it was produced to commemorate the opening of their new home arena, “OPEN HOUSE ARENA OTA,” on the 15th of this month. This is an initiative that is part of the team’s social responsibility activity “CRANE THUNDERS ONGAESHI.” This sukajan is a high-quality and fashionable tailor made with Kiryu city’s traditional “horizontal embroidery” sewn by Kiyomi Osawa, one of Japan’s leading embroidery artists from Gunma Prefecture who was also involved in Paris Fashion Week. Limited to arrival.
Team social responsibility activity “CRANE THUNDERS ONGAESHI”
CRANE THUNDERS ONGAESHI expresses our gratitude to our team’s irreplaceable partners, including our fans, local communities, and partner companies by working to solve local issues and respond to local needs. This is an activity that aims to contribute to the global common goals SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
“Yokoburi embroidery” is characterized by its painting-like beauty.
The beautiful embroidery on the back that makes this skajan unique is one of the traditional textile-related industries that have taken root in Kiryu City, which has flourished as a textile town since ancient times in the Tomo region of Gunma, where the arena was born. Among them, Kiryu is one of the leading producers in the country of horizontal embroidery. This is a special sewing machine called a “horizontal sewing machine” that moves the needle not only up and down but also left and right, and by layering threads, it creates a unique color shading and three-dimensional feel, creating a beautiful piece that looks like a painting. It is characterized by creating patterns. The unique embroidered sukajan made this method famous.
“Crane” and “Thunder” sewn by Kiyomi Osawa, a“modern master craftsman” from Kiryu City.
This limited-edition Skajan has a special specification in which the team’s symbols, “Crane” and “Thunder” (Sanders), as well as Gunma’s symbol, the Jomo Sanzan, are sewn in horizontal embroidery. We asked Kiyomi Osawa, an embroidery artist who has been selected as a “Modern Master Craftsman,” to create a Skajan jacket to commemorate the opening of Japan’s highest-level arena. Mr. Osawa is known as the “God of embroidery” and is a leading expert in horizontal embroidery. Ms. Osawa carefully sews by moving the material with her hands and stepping on the pedal of the horizontal sewing machine, and at the same time moving the lever with her knee to move the needle up and down and left and right. The process is like painting, with the needle appearing to be a brush and the cloth appearing to be a canvas. Mr. Osawa has a unique passion for representing animals vividly, and with exquisite color shading, even the texture of the crane’s feathers looks like the real thing.

Most of the manufacturing process is also handled by companies within Gunma Prefecture.
Yokoburi embroidery has become a rare technique in today’s world where computer-based sewing machines have become widespread, and the number of craftsmen has decreased. The special Skajan jacket embodies Mr. Osawa’s desire to pass on this technique and traditional crafts to the next generation, as well as CRANE THUNDES ONGAESHI’s desire to support local people and culture. In addition to Osawa’s embroidery, most of the manufacturing process, including weaving, cutting, and sewing, is done by companies in Gunma Prefecture.
All proceeds from sales, excluding costs, will be used for social responsibility activities through CRANE THUNDERS ONGAESHI.
The material is 100% pure silk, and there are five colors: grape color, benitobi, birodo, blue indigo, and jet black. Each color is available worldwide. First place. The price is 880,000 yen (tax included), and all proceeds from sales, excluding production costs, will be used for social responsibility activities through CRANE THUNDERS ONGAESHI. Delivery to purchasers is scheduled for the end of April to mid-May. Using traditional techniques from Gunma Prefecture, a beautiful pattern symbolizing the team’s name is sewn onto the back, making this a valuable piece of clothing that lets you feel the team’s support.
Production episode
It took about half a year from the time I asked Mr. Osawa to create this embroidery until he accepted the job. The design I requested for embroidery was initially quite simple, just the Gunma Crane Sanders character and logo. Mr. Osawa saw this and declined, saying, “If the pattern can be done with machine embroidery, there’s no need for me to do it.” After that, we had many meetings, and they accepted our desire to create something special that was in line with CRANE THUNDERS ONGAESHI’s philosophy of supporting local people and culture, so we asked Mr. Osawa to create the design. Now we can do it. After a period of trial and error, we were finally able to sell the product about a year after the idea was conceived.
